It's the episode where the "Trill" {as originally presented} highjacked Riker's thumbs......

I hope they chose this as the basis for the artwork. Tension headache Riker. >:)

Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

The phrase comes from the guy that does the Nitpicker's Guide. The idea is the Trill Slugs are too lazy to evolve thumbs of their own, they have to parasite into humanoid Trills.
    Keep calm & October 15th!!!!!
  • I hope they use that one pose from that one time that Riker was making a pass at that one female. Wait... never mind. They already did that. Several times.

Honestly though, I've been wanting the pre-DS9 trill in the game. :)

Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever explained the utility of put an event character in the ranked rewards? Why would he be needed if the event is over?

I agree. The ranked reward should be usable in the next event.

Don’t make me have to rank in the top 2k every event. Please don’t.

This is correct. It was shortly after I started playing. I have Tolar from the threshold. I do not have TL Mudd from the ranked.

Ranked super-rare is always an existing card, and almost indefinitely one that has been in a previous event. (Safecracker Nog is an exception here). Most seasoned players will have that crew at 3/4 or 4/4.

The ranked super-rare is more for collectors, those that want a second copy, or newer players.

If DB changed it so the ranked super-rare was a new card, and for the next event, it would change the dynamics of the game a lot more than when they did something similar with the legendary. DB would either have to introduce two new super-rares per event, or have one as the ranked one week, and the threshold the next.

I think it best to the things the way they are at the moment. Also I was in favour of the change in the legendary when its was first announced.

Alright that all makes sense I guess. I'm not holding a pitchfork or anything. Just trying to understand why the game is weighted the way it is. And from a certain perspective I understand, I don't know that I agree (but admittedly I lack the time some have had to see the different ways it worked).

    1) I remain unconvinced that players who already have larger more power crews deserve or need to have this advantage. With larger crews they are already more likely to have the named crew and trait match for the small bonus. Giving them the edge of the large bonus only ensures that the same people keep placing in the top. The old cliche of the rich keep getting richer seems to fit. Unless I'm missing something.

    2) There seems to be a side step in logic about the ranked super rare. I don't see how the tradition would need to change for this event crew to also follow into the next event. My question is simply, why shouldn't the existing SR ranked reward and Rare ranked reward, be carried forward to the next event in the same way as the Legendary? While asking the question could be construed as having a position, I don't at this point. Just inquiring to have all the info before I settle on an opinion. I don't see how carrying those cards forward would mean they had to be new rather than existing.

    3) The point about the dynamics of the game seems apt. If the 5000-1500 also went into each event with a card giving them a large bonus, there might be more competition for the ranks above 5k. But those above 1.5k will still have the advantage of two cards. In a Galaxy and Faction event they would still have a clear advantage. In a Skirmish event, they wouldn't. The status quo may be the best dynamics. I'm open to the idea.

    4) Can you agree that from the perspective of a newer player, this dynamic looks like it was made to insulate part of the population? As some form of reward to long service. Is it a balanced and competitive dynamic? I'm not going to be offended or have a tantrum if you say it is. So be blunt and honest.

Once upon a time, the rewards for an event were the event crew for that event. And then one day, the fair queen of DB land announced that henceforth, the legendary crew awarded for each event would be the legendary event crew for the following event. Naturally, the townsfolk all discussed this in a calm and civilized manner than included shouting, pitchforks, torches, tar, and feathers. The townsfolk discussed and debated for a fortnight, before finally becoming weary. Instead of prolonging the conversation, the townsfolk found a marvelous game to distract themselves.

The townsfolk now discuss aforementioned game with ne'er a thought to the way things used to be. But then one day, one of the villagers who had heretofore been quiet, decided to speak of that which has long been forgotten. Some of the villagers find themselves scratching their heads, wondering why this thing was not enacted long ago. Other villagers search for their torches and pitchforks. But many remember the smell of the tar and remain silent.

    To be continued...
(Maybe. Probably in another thread. Which should be found in another land, where ideas are brought forth and discussed, and only the most worthy are made so.)

Was this in the land of Milk and Honey or La La Land? or both? o:)
Dear TP: Non sequitur. Your facts are uncoordinated.

Personally, I think that your point (#3) about increasing competition for ranks 1,501 to 5,000 kind of contradicts your point (#4) about the perspective of newer players. Thinking first from the perspective of a newer player, I would say a newer player needs to break into that 5k range. As you suggest, this would be more competitive because older players are trying to get that same SR for the following week. Which basically creates a thicker layer of insulation, which as you say, allows the rich to get richer.

The way things stand now, an older player who already has the SR has an advantage during the event. When the event ends, usually new copies of the SR get airlocked for a small amount of honor. A newer player who gets copies of the SR (through a less competitive field than it otherwise would be) uses the SR to grow their own roster.

This is going from memory of a year ago when I was not able to rank consistently in the top 1,500. So take this for what it is: the opinion of an experienced player who remembers things, but doesn't necessarily care because such things will not affect my game. I do care about the community though. I hate to see it shrink for any reason. :)

Re: super-rare in the rank rewards. I'll second the notion that putting the upcoming SR in the rewards would dramatically increase competition and risk shutting out newer players from getting any useful rewards in the event. Back in the day (leans back in his rocking chair), being able to earn a 1/4 or 2/4 from the rank was a substantial opportunity to begin building my crew and gave me a sense of achievement when I competed. I'd say it's best not to mess with this aspect of player development/cultivation.

Another point - pack sales. If stronger players can earn both the upcoming 4* and 5* crew in the prior event, the motivation to spend Dil (or cash) to get copies of the 4* card on Wednesday becomes very low. As many thread comments illustrate (see: Tuesday packs), when players already have FF'd all the SR cards in a pack, most don't buy the packs ('cause of waste).

To be honest, I've felt since events became weekly that they ought to be scheduled so the rank rewards were useful in the following event. My selfish concern is that I would be greatly dissatisfied if the rank 4* was to become the new 4*. I don't see any appreciable difference between having it be the existing 4* in the rank table if they're featured this week or next, so that schema ought to still work. Also, here's a history lesson for newer players who don't know or older players who may have forgotten:
Once upon a time, events featured a single 4* crew with three copies in the solo thresholds and up to four copies in the rank rewards. Rank rewards were not cumulative then, and the 5* reward was restricted to the top 1000, not 1500. Competitive players had to decide whether to go for a 1/5 or tank to make a 4/4. When Galaxy events came along, they featured a different 4* in both tables, plus the Community Rewards. The paradigm of a single 4* continued in Faction and Expedition events, however.

There were a few instances of dual 4*'s, but these were few and far between. Eventually, a forum member whose screen name I haven't seen in quite awhile campaigned against what he characterized as "an extreme abomination of waste". The extent to which that forum member's lobbying influenced DB is for DB alone to know, but it did eventually follow that two 4*'s became standard in all events. Plenty other forum members requested cumulative rewards so it would be inaccurate to credit the same person for highlighting both matters, but they were obviously intertwined.

I suggest that this is so that the event is somewhat self contained; I can compete in an event, get the useful 4*, level him up and carry on. Otherwise, you have to be competitive in the first event *and* then use the character in a second event, and I don't always have the opportunity to go hard in two events. This also applies to DB re-using events; the more interlocking there is, the more work in re-use.

Longer serving players may have a different perspective, but I generally still find the 4* characters useful. This is - I think - the first event where I have both 4* FFFE.

Since it's a Galaxy event I have no chance at the 5* reward...

I also suggested this some time ago for the ranked 3* and 4*. They would make more sense for newer players to achieve for the next event instead of the past one. I would not change the threshold crew though, this should remain relevant for the current event.
