Of the four character collecting/card collecting games I've played so far, this is the only one that has had a crew slot limitation. It also is the only one that cranks out so many characters per week/month. I know I harp on MAA a lot (cause I'd actually rather be playing it -- the game was successful, Disney just wanted out of owning games..) but they did 2-3 new crew a month. I did a Transformers game (mostly out of boredom) where it was 1 new character a week.

Forgive my ignorance but what is MAA?

Marvel Avengers Alliance. Ran for about 4 years. Actually originally intended to just promo one of the Avengers films and took off. Won some awards in 2012 and I think 2013.

Watching Infinity Wars trailers is really makin me miss that thing. There were some damn good epic battles with the Black Order. (some hard as hell too -- annoying, challenging, fun...)

Pretty good storylines too, especially the Special Ops.

It's been suggested previously, but I really do think the solution is that you can use crew straight out of cryo without thawing them out.

We were told that the reason for the limited slots was having to check back with the server for the level and items on each crew. Immortalised crew members all have the same stats, so less database hammering required (perhaps these could even be stored client side?)

For the many of us who have purchased crew slots - keep them, you'll need them for non immortalised crew.

The result, everyone suddenly gets a whole bunch of available slots, since they can freeze all of their immortalised crew and still use them. Then they spend $/£/€ on packs!

    Everyone's a winner.

This is how it should have been down when the cryo was added to the game.

It would also encourage players to immortalise crew for the right reasons, to use the crew and free up slots, rather than the wrong reason, to get the crew out of the way.

Unfortunately it is too big game changer for DB, they would not sell slots for a long time, and it would upset those who are 14VIP for their hundreds of crew slots.

I used to play Marvel Puzzle Quest a lot. ( You want a real time sink, try that one.) It had the same crew slot limitations, but I was able to earn enough premium currency just through playing that I could keep buying slots at an acceptable rate without having to spend.

If STT made it possible to earn Dilithium regularly, not just through one-time rewards for achievements and collections, I think this would be far less of an issue.

I missed the unlimited crew storage part of the game. All I have is the ability to delete crew so they can’t be used and then purchase them back if I want to use them. Did I miss a feature somewhere? I haven’t seen anywhere where I can store crew other than the crew quarters

An interesting feature of STT is that you get loot for finishing useless characters! Its a good thing I have unlimited crew storage, those useless characters would quickly pile up if it wasn't there. I wish MPQ did that.

That is a great point! I think this is the only game I’ve heard of the does not offer a way to farm the premium currency. Normally it is made possible so that F2P players with enough effort and time have a slim chance of still being able to compete.

Looks like a screenshot of deleted crew that you can purchase instead of the unlimited storage. Unlimited = no limits. Purchase crew back instead of just using them? Limitation. Delete crew rather than store? Limitation. Have to FF/FE Crew to even use the feature? Limitation. I guess we have different definitions of unlimited

There's nothing preventing you in game from having everything. A player could have every crew in the game without spending a dime. Having everything = unlimited. The only question is how much time and/or money are you willing to spend doing that.

I am unwilling to spend money to expand my crew slots. I am perfectly willing to strategically spend honour to manipulate vault storage to my favour.

A player couldn’t have every crew in the game without spending a dime. Even if they stopped adding new crew today and the game ran another 20 years a free player could never have all the crew. A free player gets maybe 60 slots? They couldn’t hold only 5* crew to FF/FE them. They couldn’t earn enough honor to citation them. Crew slots, time and drop rates, along with multiple new crew weekly literally (in every sense of the word) make it impossible for a free player to have everything.

It’s still not unlimited and definitely not by the definition you give above. You only have what you have in your available slots. You do not have the crew that you delete. You have the option to repurchase them at any point in time as long as you have the room and can pay the fee, but that’s not the same thing as having them. You just have the option to purchase them at a discounted price.

Sure you can. You seem to think that time isn't on your side. Just because something might take a long time doesn't mean it can't be done. I've seen VIP0 players with 200+ immortalized crew. How did they do that with only ~65 slots?

Saying there are "limitations" as you define it are just simple game mechanics. I've deleted characters before. Last year I deleted Silik. I then re-obtained him and immortalized him just yesterday. I accidentally deleted Command Holoprogram a couple weeks ago. Annoying but I'll get him again eventually. In the mean time I'll happily spend a trivial amount of merits (a renewable free currency), instead of wasting the small amount of dilithium that a monthly card gives me. Eventually I'll get everything.

Marvel Puzzle Quest I've been playing for over four years. I have every 5* in that game but not one of them is fully leveled or fully covered (best is 12/13) but I'll eventually get everything there too.

VIP0 with 200+ crew immortalized isn’t hard if they are 1-3* crew. Even some 4* crew from events. I had close to that on my free account before giving it up. How many VIP0 players have 100 Legendary crew immortalized? What about 50? I’m guessing you could count that number with no hands. No free player could ever have everything no matter how careful and diligent they were. They would have to be immortalizing 2 golds and 2 purples a week just to keep up with the new Tuesday and Wednesday crew let alone the 175+ already existing Legendary crew.

But the point still stands that no player, no matter how much money they spend, can have everything because no amount of money can buy the number of slots to have everything.

Once a crew is deleted you no longer have them. You can purchase them, but don’t have them.

This is how you build a roster with limitations.
First, you start building your 1* roster (technically a waste of time in the short term). Vault anything you don't need (all of it in this case).
Then, you start your 2* roster. Vault most (I kept 5).
Then, you start your 3* roster. Vault most (I kept 4).
Then, you start your 4* roster. I'm nearing the end of this portion. STT gives you substantially more resources then you actually need so keeping with new 1-4*'s is a trivial task once you have all of them. Most of my 4*'s are vaulted because half of them are trash and the good ones are only good a small amount of the time.
Once you reach this point you can start investing in your 5* roster. This is tremendously time consuming but at least you can spend whatever dilithium you might have on it.

How do you even get a 5* roster without spending, one 10x pull from community rewards and occasional achievement isn’t going to get you any. If you don’t spend, you can only have two shuttles so you’ll never place top 1000 in a faction. I just don’t see it

The game gives you enough dilithium to eventually buy two shuttles. Its possible to win a Galaxy without spending money. Merit and credit pulls, gauntlet, dabo and event participation all give 4/5* crew. Srsly, this is how you put the free in freemium. The long, slow, slog. Spending money is nothing more than a shortcut. There's nothing wrong with taking the shortcut but its not for everyone. I don't have the money personally to do more than a monthly card so I play the long game. One of the ways I play the long game is not waste money on crutches like additional crew slots.

Some of it is from achievements. I had 3 shuttles and was close to a 4th when I went to the monthly card.

F2P can perhaps collect all 4* downwards fairly easily enough, however Gold is far different your reliance on begold drops, citations makes takes it that much longer to immortalise whilst having the adequate space to hold all those golds that are un-FF, you have to have a bench to hold them all otherwise if you space 1 and gain the same card you have just missed out on that 2nd Star. I really can't understand how people seem to miss out the FF steps in this discussion. For gold crew this is the most significant factor and cause for the problem.

Second point some crew are still restricted to Pack only - so no you can't currently acquire all crew without spending a dime.

why din't we get any offers for crewspace?
10€ for 5 places (or anything like this)....
every week only crew offers and who can buy more and more crew without space therefore?
  • Slots have always been a problem even for high end Ferengi players. Any additional ones are welcomed.

At this point the new spawn rate of the new crew far exceeds the slot compensation capabilities of the majority of players, Ferengi included. Half of my purple diplomacy characters are on cryo and nearly half of the security ones. Plus all blues, greens and grays. Still, I'm most of the time at the last usable slot.

We get 50% off crew space sales periodically. The last two, I believe, were December and July, so maybe they're doing a 6 month cycle or crew slot sales?

Just picked up another game, off an STT Ad no less, Marvel Strike force. No crew limits.
Now, its in its early stages, with 40 main characters, and 30+ 'minions' but growing.

And yeah you can spend money to get characters through a similar mechanism as the portal, just no limits on how many you can keep.

There may be other games out there with crew limitations, but its not everywhere.

I think one of the points of this thread is suggesting that DB increase that cycle frequency - perhaps to quarterly, at least. Slot sales/giveaways should coincide with their seasonal mega events, if not more often.

In my attempt to find information to confirm either of our claims, all I could find was the announcement from December. The new (current) forums went live in October and it doesn't appear they announced any crew slot sales in the announcements forum from the old ones:

    https://forum.disruptorbeam.com/stt/discussion/2373/happy-holidays-crew-slots-and-dabo-wheel-holiday-sales-extended-edit-12-27-new-end-time#latest

I do not recall there being more than two in the past year, but I'm open to the possibility that my memory is imperfect should additional evidence arise.

Given that it has been over 3 months since the one in December, though, makes the "3 months apart" idea a little less likely.

Yes, I recognize that. My post was trying to be helpful to convey when we might reasonably expect them to offer another sale if they follow their past behavior. While I get that this thread wants to change that status quo, I figured having full information on what exactly that status quo is might be helpful for individual crew planning.
