Honor spending advice

YamianYamian ✭✭ ✭✭
Greetings.

First things first. I'am a free to play player (VIP 1 because of the GoTA ending reward thingy). I play solo (the fleet I'm in was just for the achievement). I don't have any immortalized crew and the crew I have is kinda all over the place (various levels, various stars).

I'm getting close to 150k honor and I'm looking for an advice on what to do with it. Options I'm thinking about:

1) Buy Kahless (or Cpt. Bev Picard), wait for 50k and buy the other one.
2) Spend it to bring my 2* Prince Bashir to 5*. Not sure if it's worth it.
3) Cite some other 1/5* I have even though it will only be 4/5.
4) Spend it to cite some of my purple crew (I have about 30 of them from various events). Honor would give me 8 citations, +2 I already have (+1 after I finish the campaign) = 11.

Initially I wanted to save 100k for Kahless, then I got Bashir and was thinking that I will cite him. Now that I have to airlock more and more purples, I'm considering option 4 so I can start working on immortalizing them (I have some of them leveled up even though they are not FF - as I said, crew all over the place).

I can list my crew if it will help you to help me.

I would say in your position you should hold off. Definitely don't cite 4* crew unless it is essential for an immediate and specific situation. Finish off all your 2 and 3 star crew. Use 50K on this month's mega legendary crew. Save the rest. If you cite a crew, make sure it is a high value crew. Bashir is good, but odds are you'll get far better soon.

I'm sitting on a bit over 150K, myself, plus a legendary citation. I've wanted Kahless the Unaffordable for a long time, but I so many who have his combination that I put it off. I was planning to use it for this mega, but I don't think any of my survivalist crew would help enough after the events.

I think David's advice is good. Personally, I feel like in most cases, Honor should be spent on something that's sort of obvious to you — meaning, it fills a great need that you have, or it is used for a character that you absolutely love and can't wait to add stars to. I probably hoard it more than many players do (I've currently got just over 200k, and haven't spent more than a citation here and there, off and on, for the past year, at least), but it's nice to know I've got that in reserve for any situation where I may really want to use it.

Of course, the argument can be made that one can save and save and never spend, and that's not necessarily bringing any current joy or usefulness to your life, so take that with a grain of salt. ;)

Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

When I started playing, that initial "obvious something" was Kahless - a legendary, that seems to have good stats. By the time I got the 100k required, I got 2/5 Prince Bashir. With my MED being the worst, I decided to hoard more honor and use the 150k in case I wont get another crew...

But now I noticed that I don't have enough high level crew that would cover voyages and shuttles (which I don't usually run but now I kinda have to for the campaign), so I thought I could cite some of my purples hoping that it would improve my team, which would allow me to get longer voyages and more shuttles. As a side effect, I could finally begin to pretend to participate in the events apart from leeching the community rewards  . And then I run out of crew slots and I have to fire someone...

And I'm definitely guilty of saving resources for a rainy day and never spending... ;-)

    Not desperate, survivalist.
  • I would recommend you wait and not spend until next weekend. You can use 50K to buy a citation to upgrade Desperate Janeway and you would have a 5/5* in a month's time. (you get one 1/5* Desperate Janeway with minimal participation in the upcoming mega-event).

As for the remaining 100K of honor, it depends. I would personally wait. The 50K investment in FF Desperate Janeway should be your best bang for the buck. As long as you have space on your roster, you can wait before deciding on what to do.

Waiting seems to be the prevailing opinion here, so I will. One week won't hurt me anyway.

The only issue I have (and that's the reason I'm considering citing purples) is that my crew quality and quantity is bad, so I doubt I will be able to get the legendary.

You should be able to hit 25k even with a poor crew. I was able to get the mega recurring in my second ever event (and probably could have in the first if I'd had a clue as to what was going on in the first). It may require a bit of babysitting the game since it's a faction event, but it shouldn't take you long at all to get her. I would then focus your energy on leveling her, because you'll have a immortalized five star in four weeks and that's always a good investment.

Yes, only the pure faction event will present any real difficulty to hitting 25k VP, and it can still be done with some vigilance and made easier with as much of a kickstart you can manage (there are several strategies on the forums in various places that describe it). It is the single biggest thing you can do to improve a new roster quickly. You may not think you can, but you definitely can.

I wouldn't buy any of the honour hall legendaries in your situation. You should save it for now and if your crew is in the early stages you won't be able to level a 5* to fully equipped without great pains. Once you reach 4* and 5* items, they can take a while to build and you are crippling your crew if you spend a week on one item or burn your resources to replicate it when you can level multiple good 3* to a high enough level to be useful for Med, Sci and Eng. Your focus should be crew you have the means to level and adding as much as you can as often as you can rather than lumping everything into one character that will take you three weeks to level. A crew of fully equipped 3* gets you to 4 hour voyages where you start collecting some good 3* replicator rations. Use these to build your 4* items for maximum value.

If you have one or two 3/4 and they are at or near level 100 with total voyage scores of at least 2400 or a base primary skill over 850 with a skill you are lacking (Med, Eng, Sci), then I would consider those for citation. You have to build a good overall crew because there are six skills to worry about. I would focus on getting your voyages consistently to 6 hours first and then worry about everything else. The cheapest way is through 4* characters such as the 4/4 you can get in every Galaxy and the odd 4* citation to fill critical gaps. Once you have a good base of characters, you can start thinking about citing legendaries and only cite mega event legendaries in the beginning because they give the most bang for your buck. If you over extend yourself on building one character, it can weaken you in the long run.

@robownage, [ISA] Big McLargeHuge : I watched a video about kickstarting the shuttles, the guy got to 3.5k VP and then had 70-80% success chances even with using level 100 legends and purples. So I really can't see myself succeeding.

@Average Guy : As I said, my crew is a bit mess, I have level 1 4/4 and 3/4 as well as level 40 1/4...
Why 850 skill? Does that unlock something? I was thinking about getting 6.5k VP for Combat Medic Paris during this event but he seems to be 7 points short...
And how do you calculate the voyage score? I tried to figure it out from the level 100 crew spreadsheet, which shows a total of 2526 for Paris above, which is a sum of his skills, but the numbers for the skills differ from the ones in wiki so I assume they are modified by something... I assume the number (2400) was picked because that will get you to the 6h voyage?

I was thinking that citing and leveling some of my 4* crew would get me to 4h voyage; 6h (based on the estimator posted somewhere else on this forum) requires 5k in skills, which seems way out of my reach at this moment. What is special about 6h voyages?

At and after the 6 hour mark is where super rare characters begin to drop, and the size of chroniton and honor drops go up as well.

And the thing you’re not accounting for with shuttle events is that you get VP even in failures. For 3.5k, you get 800 VP for a failed shuttle. That adds up, and you won’t fail them all regardless. Once you settle into the VP level your crew can support, you will still have reaped all the benefits of starting from a higher level.

I’d think you can get 25K VP each week to get the Mega 5* okay even if you only go that far and stop. Even with my brand new alt account that had only green and blue crew decently leveled I was able to get the copies of Kol during his Mega.

Voyage score is Base + Average Roll for each skill, then added together to get the total. The level 100 spreadsheet by default shows the scores including maximum bonuses from starbase and collections.

A lot of cards exist with poor stats and there are a lot of good cards with a base primary skill over 800+ (I just picked a high number, choose your own threshold to work on). Just pick cards with higher primary or voyage scores to work on if you can so you don't end up leveling KDF Gowron at 1/4 which is a waste.
  • Matt_DeckerMatt_Decker ✭✭✭✭✭ ✭✭✭✭✭
@Yamian -- the advice here from others about going for the thresholds to get a copy of Determined Janeway each week, and adding a citation to her, is absolutely the best advice. You should have the crew to make that happen if you focus and manage your time. If you have any Survivalist crew, you should focus on levelling up the best one or two of them right now to help you reach that goal.

Good choice even if you can't quite make it on the faction event you have enough to give 2 citations to the mega legendary if absolutely necessary, also Janeway is main cast so will get plenty of events in the future.

Bashir is not a bad choice for citation and he will probably be your best COM DIP voyager for a while he also provides extra top up in MED which is always a boon.

As for other suggestions for citation spending it depends who else you have, so by all means post a list you will get helpful feedback here.

    Side notes
Save your dilithium earned from achievements et al. for shuttle purchasing you will need 4 shuttles to compete competently at faction events and to haul in extra trainers.

It also sounds like your roster is fit to bursting so if you need any weeding advice again post some lists of who you have.

Apologies for my delayed reply, I had to deal with some humanoids from a planet they call Earth.

    Legendary:
    Prince Bashir 2/5
    Dancing Chekov 1/5
    Etana Jol 1/5
    Seven in Silver 1/5
    Tuxedo Nog 1/5
    Kol of House Kor 1/5
    Durango Troi 1/5
    Thrax 1/5

Super Rares (not all, just the one's I'm considering for citation):
    Douglas Pabst 3/4 (because he's 3/4)
    Taresian Kim 3/4 (because he's 3/4)
Desert T'Pol 3/4 (lower SCI than Test Pilot Archer but 3/4)
Grathon Tolar 2/4 (highest ENG among my purples)
Test Pilot Archer 2/4 (higher SCI than Desert T'Pol but only 2/4)
Siranna 2/4 (2nd MED for my team after Assimilated Troi)
Lewis Zimmerman 2/4 (2nd ENG for me after Grathon Tolar)
Assimilated Troi 1/4 (Best MED on my roster and I'm still mad that I didn't get the 35k VP for the 2nd star)

Thinking about it, ENG might not be that relevant since Determined Janeway is ENG primary.

I don't really care about COM/DIP/SEC since they seem to be on almost everyone, but I will list a couple just in case there is someone interesting.

    CMD:
    Incognito Kirk (2/4)
    Sheriff Worf (2/4)
    Keyla Detmer (1/4)
    Vosk (1/4)

    DIP:
    Armed Philippa Georgiou (1/4)
    Tourist Quark (1/4)
    Lady Beverly (1/4)

    SEC:
Robin Hood (1/4 but I suppose I can get it to 4/4 through daily rewards)
    Ba'ku Worf (1/4)
    Demora Sulu (1/4)

As for level, most of them are 10-ish, being leveled in a hurry when I needed to complete the daily.

I'm on 3 shuttles now, saving for 4th (thanks for the campaigns).
As for my roster, I usually fire someone 1* blue or green (I save my portal pulls so I'm not getting any new crew except for events).

I didn't want to post full crew list because "that would take too much time" and "the post would be too long"... Considering the time I spent on this and the length... I'm good at planning things and time management :D.

It's hard to say for sure without knowing the rest of your crew, but a few things jump out at me:

Even at 1/5, Durango Troi was one of my top base SEC for quite awhile. There were some Faction events where I used her even if she didn't have a bonus.

When Robin Hood was new, he became my #2 base SEC at 4/4. Plus, it's a given that we'll get a Picard event or two since he'll be back in the new show later this year, and he's in a couple Collections.

Unless you're just fond of her, I'd 86 Demora Sulu. She won't help with any current Collections, she's unlikely to help your crew, and her event is pretty far down on the list to be replayed. Plus, she's not even in the Time Portal yet, so she's stuck at 1/4 for the time being.

Vosk can help with the Valor in Combat Collection, but otherwise everything about Demora Sulu applies to him.

I thought you were talking about getting Medic Paris? He's a lot better than Siranna, and main cast, and in portal so you can get more copies of him without citations. Siranna is not main cast, and not in portal, and you're hoarding your portal pulls currently so her potential is very poor in the short-medium term.

Trying to keep every crew you get seems tempting at first because your crew is getting stronger, but early game crew management is critical in STT.

Totally agree on airlocking Demora Sulu, you don't need her at all. Lady Beverly and Vosk are also not great. While Lady Beverly is main cast, she still has a lot fewer events than most main cast.

And I'm fine with sacking my 1/4* crew when I find someone more competent. They are low level anyway.

Etana Jol then Prince Bashir or Durango Troi if you want to boost shuttle SEC, I use Jol everyday if she doesn't make a voyage she is a daily shuttle runner as well. Although Bashir is CMD DIP he does have Med which will be useful and because he is slightly higher fusion you will see the benefit much sooner. Troi however has great Security base. Considering where you are in the game though I think voyages is still the way to focus. By the time you have finished Jol you will probably have other legendaries contending for a citation.

Regarding Purples any purple citations you earn from campaign I think Assimilated Troi is a fine choice, Zimmerman also, I don't agree with booting Vosk he's a good voyager, interesting traits and will be very good for you on CMD ENG voyages. And although some have scoffed at T'Pol's stats I find them quite useful SEC SCI is quite a limited range and her stats are decent enough for that I feel.

Demora Sulu I'd agree you don't really need her very limited event potential so she is a fairly safe bet to axe.

I retract my Vosk airlock recommendation at your current state in the game, by the time I got him I was way past using most purples in voyages so I never saw his value. Looking at the big book, he's top 10 voyage numbers and top 10 cmd base for purples so he's worth considering keeping. He's still not main cast though, and Super Rare crew's most important value long-term is to be event crew and variants. Once you build up legendaries to run your voyages, vosk will never have a task again.

The key reason I called out Vosk for dismissal was that @Yamian only has him at 1/4. At that level, he's not going to be nearly so helpful, and by time those other three stars could be added, it's almost certain that he'll be reduced in his standings. Had he been a 3/4, I'd have highly encouraged citing him to immortality. Even at 2/4, I might have encouraged keeping him and using Campaign citations this month and next, if possible. But at 1/4? Nah.

Yea my rule of thumb is to acquire or possibly cite 3/4s if they're in a position to benefit your shuttles or voyages immediately. But trying to cobble them together one copy at a time often results in your roster outgrowing them before they can be completed. I'd far prefer using my crew slots for collection 1/4s who are guaranteed to eventually benefit your roster through stat-boosting bonuses.

Without collections or events, their value plummets with each star missing.

Damn. I should have started to participate here earlier :(. My roster wouldn't be such a ****show.

I havent even considered the value of main cast characters for events. I thought their appeal was just being main cast. I also tend to ignore traits.

So if I use 50k to cite Janeway (provided I get her, I didnt have the time to participate in the event), what to to with the remaining 100k? Wait for the next mega event and spend it on the crew as well if it's worth it? I don't necessarily want spend everything right now, but I'm aware of my habit of saving for a rainy day (that never comes)...

Also I don't want to start a new topic (especially since we kinda touched the subject here) and I would like to get some advice on giving Demora Sulu some company (= firing people). I usually just select the one with lowest stats (focusing on CMD/DIP/SEC since they are not that rare, at least for me), but the discussion above suggests that might not be the best metric. I also thought that keeping someone who isn't in the portal yet was a great idea since you cannot get the crew and you can cite them since you already have 1/4...

If there are any good citation targets I missed in one of my posts above, let me know.

1/4 (all of them level 1-10 unless stated otherwise)
    Armed Philippa Georgiou
Assimilated Troi (used to by my fav to cite once I finish the current campaign, not so sure now that I have Medic Paris...)
    Ba'ku Worf
    Captain Q
    Captain Sulu
    Commander Barclay
    Commander Donatra
    Defiant Commander Worf
    Disguised Chakotay
    Disguised Tuvok
    Dr. Gillian Taylor
    Keyla Detmer
    Lady Beverly
Lieutenant Valeris (Level 42, I would like to keep her)
    Lt Commander Airiam
    Mirror Tucker (Level 20)
    Prison Break Lorca
    Prospect Michael Burnham
    Rakal Troi
    Tholian Prisoner
    Time Loop Mudd
    Tourist Quark
    Vosk

2/4 (all of them level 1-10)
    1701 Jadzia Dax
Grathon Tolar (my fav to cite because ENG, but not a main cast...)
    Incognito Kirk
    Lewis Zimmerman
    Lieutenant Chekov
    Sheriff Worf
Siranna (I kinda want to keep her since I rely on her hull repair ability in skirmish events)
    Test Pilot Archer

3/4 (all of them level 1-10;)
    Desert T'Pol
    Douglas Pabst
    Taresian Kim

4/4 (various levels, I really don't want to dump any of those)
    Combat Medic Paris
    Doc Crusher
    Fugitive Spock
    Pugilist Q
Robin Hood (only 1/4 now but he should get to 4/4 through the daily rewards so I put him here)
    Section 31 Philippa Georgiou

I'm not really in need of crew quarters, so we don't have purge 70% of my roster. I'm fine with keeping all of them if they have a potential future.
Trying is the first step toward failure.
