Request for advice on 4*s backlog (64 non-FE)

Hello, y'all, and thanks for your time. I think that some outside perspective might help me in deciding which of these cards to keep working on, as opposed to dismissing them for Honor points & eating the sunk costs. Therefore, I am asking for your help. I would greatly appreciate any advice, suggestions, and/or constructive criticism that you might decide to offer. First, though, some context and caveats.

Character names which appear in Red Text are indicated as "Do Not Airlock" by the inestimable @Leshy 's awesome spreadsheet, which in turn is based on my current immortalized crew (147), number of best active crew by skill (8, because of Voyages), and uncompleted away missions (3). Recently, I have tended to focus on skills in this order: MED/ENG/SCI/DIP/SEC/CMD. I am a casual Arena & Gauntlet player, although I would like to someday place 1st for the Gauntlet achievement. My preference is to keep main cast, event crew and cool art/character cards, as well as my favorite characters' variants for the future Collections achievements and, more importantly, because I like them, e.g. Geordi La Forge.

Here's a breakdown of my crew by type and status:

  1. Legendary=32 | Immortal 5*=1 | Cryo=0
  2. Super Rare=143 | Immortal 4*=55 | Cryo=5
  3. Rare=9 | Immortal 3*=8 | Cryo=36
  4. Uncommon=6 | Immortal 2*=5 | Cryo=26
  5. Common=0 | Immortal 1*=0 | Cryo=11
  6. Total=190 | Active=69 | Cryo=78

I can also provide lists of my 32 5*s and my 79 FE 4*s, if further context would be helpful in your evaluation. So now, without further ado, here are the 64 non-FE 4*s I am looking at:

Your crew is far more extensive than mine. I can't say anything for most of those, but Dr. Hippocrates Noah I have at 1/4 and FE. He serves me very well.
  • KrigearKrigear ✭✭ ✭✭
Without knowing your crew makeup excluding those you have listed here ill base my answers on who i have completed, vaulted and have never had a big reason to bring out (outside of events). Or who i keep airlocking when i get them based on how useless they are.

    Liaison torres
Mirror Janeway(honestly i would airlock her anyways she wont show in in the pool for a long time so to FF her would be a huge waste of honor)
    Defiant commander worf
    Undercover O'brian
    KDF Gowron
    Commander Tomalok
    Captain John Harriman
    Cardassian Kira
    GI Chakotay
    Colonel Karr

Going through your list, you have a lot of useful crew that once you get more stars on them. But based on looking through the list these are crew you can airlock relatively safely (worf, kira, O'brian, janeway and torres have all be event crew at some point).
  • Marko RamiusMarko Ramius ✭✭✭ ✭✭✭
A lot of your 4* crew won't be particularly useful until you can get at least 3 stars on them. Unfortunately, the game is set up so that it constantly churns out new 4* crew by the bundle, so only the best will survive in the end. After a glance, some of the heros that I'd work on are Changeling Bashir (because of the rare MED/ENG combination), and Lieutenant Valeris (very strong gauntlet character).

Other then Valeris, from a gauntlet standpoint, you don't have anyone that will blow away a stat category. However, Disguised Tuvok, Commander Tomalak, Augment Riker, Prisoner O'Brien, and Rakal Troi have been used by some mid to high level players if their traits match the gauntlet traits of the day (although I wouldn't personally use any of them unless they are at least 45% crit chance).

As a strategy overall, because of the rate that 4* crew is introduced to the game, I would work from the top down, and finish off you FF 4*, then the 3/4* crew. This will at least provide you with the best stats that you can use on voyages and shuttle missions. A 1/4* will rarely help you on either of these things even if they are level 100 FE.

Also, when you do premium pulls, don't keep a 4* just because it's a 4*. There are a lot of crappy 4* crew. Use the wiki to check the stats, and in your case because of the number of crew you have, if they don't have at least 1 stat over 800 FF/FE, then just airlock them. Adding to your 1/4* list isn't going to help you. In addition, if you get a behold, only select a crew that you can add a star, preferably one to get a FF 4*. If all of the choices are not owned, select the one with the best stats, but then airlock another crew with the same stat categories, but inferior stats.

This is generally the system that I use to help me weed out crew. However, don't forget that the most important thing is to have fun, so if you like a crew member, that's the most important thing. Any crew that you like is automatically on the "do not airlock" list. Hope this all helps!

I would suggest you consider dumping the following:

    3 50 Lily Sloane
    3 50 Tash
2 70 Admiral Picard (yes, it's Picard, but his stats are awful…his only 4* variant that I've got cryo'd)
2 60 Colonel Karr (truly disappointing base stats, only slightly mitigated by an okay proficiency)
    2 50 Captain John Harriman
    2 50 Fesek
    2 50 KDF Gowron
1 40 Rakal Troi (mainly because she's such an utter PITA to level)
    1 20 Weyoun Clone 4
1 1 Bestselling Author Jake Sisko
1 1 Liaision Torres (normally I'd advise keeping any main cast crew, but again, stats are bleh)

Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

My advice... level both your laforges. Next time he's in an event you have 2 bonus chars with different primary skills. Things like that make all the difference in events. Robin hood has excellent security, probably even as a 3/4*. I tend to focus on main cast first, because they tend to be bonus in the most events. It's never a bad idea to level Janeways, Burnhams, and Daxs either, as they seem to be event regulars.

The others above have given some good advice (and some questionable) ... here's my opinion if it is still needed:

    - First, I wouldn't airlock any of the 4/4 or 3/4 crew ... of the 3/4 crew I think all are in the portal pool, so that just requires a bit of patience.

    - Of your 2/4s ... well, yes Karr is weak and so is Tomalak (only 2 skills) ... furthermore, you'll never really need them for events etc. (I believe Karr was bonus in one).

    - Of your 1/4s there are a bunch ... however I would NOT airlock any Janeway (as mentioned above), as she is by far the most common event crew. A 1/4 will often help out in Faction (or Expedition) events. I'd also keep the Torres for the time being, but the Jake Sisko can go.
There are some really tough ones to level (Rakal Troi, Kazon Seska) so that might be a reason to airlock. But, I'd rather freeze than airlock crew like Rakal Troi.

    Key Advice
But far and away the best piece of advice I can give you ... and what would make it so much easier to give airlock advice ... I would keep, at least, ALL 1/4 and 2/4 crew at level 1. Just equip their first item and then just leave them there.

All the effort/resources you've placed in levelling 50 of the above crew could have gone into the remaining 14 and you'd have them all FE.
Almost all 1/4 and 2/4 crew (there are about 5 exceptions) will not add much to your crew at level 100, so just leave them at level 1, and then it is easier to airlock them in case you need to because you've not put any effort into them.

    As a last comment ...
Can you not freeze immortal 4*s? I currently have 41 4*s non-FF, of which 39 are at level 1 and then I have 42 FE non-FF 4*s ... I've started freezing the likes of FO Saru and Lt. Ash because I've got recent replacements for them in both 4* and 5* range (e.g. Away Team Saru, the new Sarek) who are not FF (or just better) and so I cannot get rid of those without losing value.

Another recent example is that Prospect Michael Burnham (FF) will take over Grad. Michael Burnham's (imm) spot after the next event. I have plenty of good SCI/ENG only crew (Icheb, Degra etc.) that I value Prospect's 3-skill voyage spread more than high base scores and SCI specialisation (their ENG voyage scores are similar).

Anyway, maybe by reading what my thought process is for decisions on my crew you might gain some new insight on how to possibly manage your crew.

    good luck.

I don't recommend sacking 3/4, waiting for last star can be longer than waiting for three, but it gives at least some guarantee and you have emergency citation as mean to free crew space. On the same 4/4 are worth priority leveling simply by being 4/4 and you only have 2 of them anyway.

Also - you really should stop spreadleveling your crew. It's much, MUCH easier to sack lv.1 1/4 unless it's voyage exclusive. In fact any non-exclusive lv1 1/4 is priority airlock unless you explicitely know that you will need him soon - with your 32 5* and 79 FFFE 4* it's unlikely that you need their skills that much so it's only trait pathing or featuring in the next event.

I think I would need to know who your 55 immortal purples are
but you pretty much have prioritised your next step. Age of Sail La forge is immortalising fodder, but Prospect Burnham is the priority for the event, once this event is done, I am assuming you have grad burnham immortalised, Cryo Grad Burnham as you have a better purple Burnham now.

Ok thanks for the additional info I'd probably have to have a more detailed look but on a quick squiz... empress sato is probably worth cryo you have shras, voq and celeb Tyler who are better, Sarek is better than ambassador Sarek so probably another cryo there and drone seven is better than TA seven so another cryo there I think. I'll probably amend this shortly.

Actually, I do not have Celebratory Ash Tyler. I do have Lt. Ash Tyler FFFE, and I wish DB would be consistent with that stupid period in the Lt's & Dr's.

Also, I have plenty of candidates for the freezer in mind already, should I need to open up some slots. I am looking more for thought processes and recommendations regarding which crew to focus resources on in the future.

I do appreciate your feedback, though, very much! LLAP

    So ... how I do it ...

I take the best 3/4 crew I have in a stat and get them to 100 then take the least/worst/equal etc. immortalised crew and cryo them.

    Example
Take your Robin Hood (Picard) to 100 ... he has a SEC base of 843 (starbase bonus not included) ... then a decent CMD and negligible DIP.

Then ... Tommy Gun Dixon is comparable FF/FE to a 3/4 FE Robin Hood, so I would freeze Dixon.

There are many ways to go about determining who to freeze, but I like sticking with like for like (as it were).

Then just move on to your next best option that you can level and where you have someone who you could freeze for ... e.g. level Kelby and freeze Mayweather?

You have a lot of options to freeze, i.e. there are quite a number of 4* immortals that I'm sure you never use.

    Who to Level
As for who to choose to level ... I let myself be driven by:
    - event crew.
    - fuse level.
    - base stats.
    - proficiency stats.

in that order. So this week I'm completing all the Discovery/Andorian crew I've still left unlevelled (even though I'm 100% sure they won't be used during the Galaxy event ... so Expedition Shran, Away Team Saru and Prospect Michael Burnham).

@RaraRacing , I used a similar approach when I froze my non-Cadet 3*s, i.e. leveled up a 4* to 100 & then cryo'd the 3* with the same skills. I do like your 3/4* FE approach, e.g. finish equipping 3 80 Robin Hood & freeze FFFE Tommy Gun Dixon. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts! LLAP

@Marko Ramius , thanks for the advice on Bashir & Valeris, as well as suggesting a minimum skill check of 800 (I have been using 700 lately). I appreciate you taking the time to help me! LLAP

Thanks, @Krigear , for taking time to help me, and yeah, I have been glaring at a few of those you listed, wondering if they are worth the resources. An outside perspective is helpful to me because it removes the emotional component of time & resources I have used in the past, instead focusing on who to work on in the future. LLAP

Your crew is far more extensive than mine. I can't say anything for most of those, but Dr. Hippocrates Noah I have at 1/4 and FE. He serves me very well.

Thanks, @DavideBooks , I appreciate you taking time to help me out. I am keeping Dr. Hippocrates Noah around for a few reasons, namely his skills combo & his coolness factor. :)

LLAP

Not a problem can I just ask a few questions:

    1) Are you out to collect them all eventually?
    2) Are you willing to use honor on super rare citations or just legendary?

I think by using Cryo on the FF/FE 4s you no longer use you will free up valuable space and release the pressure you maybe finding with your un full fused super rares. If you are prepared to sacrifice some honor for super rare citations I would think about bringing your 1 stars up to two stars sooner or later you are going to get a portal drop or other that will then bring them up to 3/4 or fully fuse your current 3/4s.

But the most important thing is to make sure you have enough space to do so. I certainly wouldn't consider spacing any super rares if you are out to complete a collection, unless they were dups.

For me I always put preference over:
Events, Voyages and Weekend Challenges or getting rid of my blue crew the latter two I suspect you have no problem with :)

    EDIT
I noticed you have Guinan and Assimilated La Forge given they are in the top 10 for voyages they are perhaps worth bringing up to level 100 aswell

As for who to choose to level ... I let myself be driven by:
    - event crew.
    - collection viability.

I've added in a new driver (in bold) to determine which crew to level ... I'm pretty sure that I'll be levelling crew that fit the various collections that will be part of the cryostats vault with the next update.

There are plenty of "lulls" in the game where I'm swimming between crew to level with no real focus.

This is an additional reason not to airlock crew ... who knows you might be air locking the last crew you need to complete a collection ... that'd be a real bummer.

It also might make buying citations for 4*s viable ... it depends on what the collection rewards are going to be, but if I get Dil for completing a collection I wouldn't hesitate to buy one 4* citation to do so (I'm f2p so any additional Dil could be great - extend a voyage to 20 hrs, buy event packs etc. etc. etc.).

Oh, I have a dozen or so that I could freeze right now, but I am in no hurry to do so because of slot pressure. I will edit the list of my FFFE 4*s to highlight those in cyan, per @Leshy , but some will remain active for Voyages/Gauntlet/whatnot. To answer your specific questions:

    1) No, I do not plan to collect them all. It would be nice to do so, but I cannot keep up with DB's rate of introducing new crew to make that feasible within my entertainment budget. Would I like to collect them all? Yes, eventually.

    2) Yes, I will use Honor for citations on Super Rares. Example: A while back, I used 18K to FF Tommy Gun Dixon, after which I then critted a troublesome node. Which leads me to this point:

When I started playing STT, I was a "completionist", i.e. crit every node, collect every card, &c. Somewhere along the way, I entered into a "competitor" mindset re: Events, thus my 4* backlog. Lately, though, I am more of a mind to work on who I already have, like and want to see when I login. Plus, I really like the Voyages for crew drops, whether it's just for Honor points or it's a fusible 4*, e.g., I finished Romulan Kirk via Voyages.

I run the Magnificent 7 blues for weekend 3* Cadets, Riker's Angels for the M-F 2* Cadets, plus I like to keep at least one 3* and one 2* on my workbench for Daily Missions if needed. Again, I could freeze/airlock a bunch of cards, so there is no pressure on that front.

Right now, I plan to FE my FF 4*s, then FE my 3/4*s. If I need slots, I will airlock 1/4*s from the bottom upwards, keeping in mind traits & Gauntlet. The Legendaries can wait until I am comfortable with my Super Rare situation.

I also try to remind myself what @eXo | Frank told me way back when: Marathon, not sprint.

I am totally down on the Collections driver! La Forge will be my first, hopefully, thus why I have never airlocked any of his variants. I would order my current priorities thusly:

    • fuse level
    • collections
    • stats
    • coolness
    • event crew

I put Event crew last because, to be honest, I am starting to burn out on the Events in general, regardless of type or crew. If DB would ever fix the damn "Promote to Squadron Leader" bug, I would feel less pressure to level up Event crew to help my squadmates. But that's a whole other can of worms, not relevant to this thread.

Sorry in advanced for the long post.

I have a situation that sounds similar. I have a total of 105 slots (all full) as well as 6 crew waiting to be placed in my slots. I’m hoping to find out which 4* crew I should airlock for the moment.

I have 6 5* crew, 53 4*, 38 3*, 8 2*. The crew members I want to keep are mostly the Next Gen and Voyager crew. I also checked out some stats and traits necessary for certain missions. Some I have kept simply because they were the only one of that species or with that trait.

I would like an opinion on which ones I should keep.

Here are the crew that I don’t really care about either way. If they are strong characters for Voyages or the Gauntlet or if I should keep them for other reasons please tell me.

    2/4*
    - Mirror Empress Sato
    - Advocate Kalos
    - First Officer Saru
    - Klingon O’Brien
    - Weyoun Clone 4
    - Ambassador Shras

    1/4*

    - Commander Barak
    - Orion Slaver
    - Martia
    - Ruk
    - Tourist Quark
    - Ambassador K’Ehleyr
    - Lt. Ash Taylor
    - Sarek
    - Gralik Durr
    - Tash
    - Young Kahn
    - Torchbearer Voq
    - Graduation Micheal Burnham
    - Niners Rom
    - Prospect Micheal Burnham
    - Rura Penthe Reed
    - Mirror Uhura
    - Alidar Jarok
    - Mirror Jadzia Dax

    3*

    2/3*
    - Lursa Duras
    - Gilora Rejal
    - Morn
    - Captain Dathon
    - Holodeck 3 Dr. Brahms
    - Commander Chekov

    1/3*

    - Keevan
    - Lt. Commander Nella Daren
    - Idrin
    - Ensign Mendon
    - Expidition Vash

As I mentioned I am looking to mostly looking to dismiss the 4* crew but am willing to look at the 3 and 2 * for crew to dismiss as well. I’m hoping that by dismissing many unnecessary 4* crew that I can start gathering levelling up many 1, 2 and 3 star crew to put them in cryo since they are the easiest to immortalized. I also want to level some up for the cadet challenges.

Here are the characters that I would like to keep.

    I have 6 legendary crew

    All are 1/5 *

    - Beowulf Kim
    - Suus Mahna Sarek
    - Mirror Jean-Luc Picard
    - Will Scarlett
    - Mariachi Q
    - Mirror Regent Worf (Needed for missions)

These are the 4* characters that I’d like to keep, mostly because they are Voyager or Next Gen crew. If they aren’t great for Cadet Challenges, the Gauntlet or Voyages let me know and I will consider either dismissing them or levelling them up first. Their level is in brackets.

    4/4*

    - Bridge Officer Troi (100) (Needed for missions)
    - Drone Seven of Nine (50)

    3/4*

    - Marla McGivers (20) ( I’m not completely against dismissing her. But since she’s 3/4 * I thought I should keep her)

    2/4*

    - Klingon Neelix (40)
    - Reinforcements Stements (30) (Needed for missions with prodigy trait)

    1/4*

    - Dahar Master Kor (60) ( Again not completely against dismissing him but since he’s already at 60 I thought I should keep him)
    - Liaison Torres (40)
    - Tuvix (40) (Needed for missions)
    - Grand Proxy Neelix (30) (Needed for missions)
    - Duchamps (30)
    - Captain Janeway (30)
    - Augment Riker (30) (Needed for missions)
    - Anbo-jyutsu Riker (20)
    - Mirror Geordie La Forge (20)
    - Commando Shran (20) (Needed for Inspiring trait for missions)
    - Cardassian Kira (20) (Needed for Saboteur trait for missions and Gauntlet)
    - Rakal Troi (10)
    - Icheb (10)
    - Ambassador Sarek (10) (Needed for Communicator trait for missions and
    Gauntlet)
    - Mirror Janeway (10)
    - Author Doctor (10)
    - Mirror Phlox (10) (Needed for Interrogator trait for missions and Gauntlet)
    - Chief O’Brien (10) Needed for Gauntlet
    - Commander Tomalak (10) (Don’t like him but need him for his Command/ Veteran Skill/Trait)
    - Assimilated Tuvok (10)
    - Buster Kincaid Kim (10)
    - Katra McCoy (10)

At this point if I have 3/3* or 2/2* I just listed as wanting to keep them since they should be quick enough to level up. The ones I want to keep the most are Voyager or Next Gen crew.

    3*

    3/3*

    - Maquis Takeover Torres (90) (Needed for missions)
    - Constable Odo (40) (Needed for Changeling trait)
    - Dr. Carol Marcus (40)
    - Hugh (30)
    - Groundskeeper Boothby (30)
    - Duelist Barclay (30)
    - Commando Crusher (30) (Needed for missions)
    - Commander Scott (30)
    - Deanna Troi (20)
    - CMO Ogawa (20)
    - Prisoner “Bones” McCoy (20)
    - Dr. Reyga (20)
    - First Maje Culluh (20)
    - Third Remata’Klan (20)
    - Talos IV Spock (10)
    - Boxer Chakotay (10)
    - Hockey Kim (10)
    - Lwaxana Troi (10)
    - Chief Engineer La Forge (10) (Needed for missions)

    2/3*

    - Mora Pol (20) (Needed for Civilian Trait)
    - Temporal Shift Kes (20) (Needed for missions)
    - Ambassador Neelix (10)

    1/3*
    - Security Chief Tuvok (50) (Needed for missions)
    - Ensign Crusher (50)
    - Hockey Paris (30) (Needed for missions)
    - Florist Q (10)

2* crew that I want to keep.

    2/2

    - Seven in Blue (50)
    - Commander Riker (40)
    - Nurse Kes (30)
    - Cadet Sito Jaxa (20)
    - Commander Chakotay (20)
    - Lt. Commander Scott
    - Lieutenant Commander Saru

    1/2*

    - Kathryn Janeway (20)
  • al103al103 ✭✭✭ ✭✭✭

Currently your basic workforce. Keep of course.
    - Marla McGivers (20) ( I’m not completely against dismissing her. But since she’s 3/4 * I thought I should keep her)
Good DIP, already 3/4, easy enough to level, drops so chance of 4/4. Keep.
    - Klingon Neelix (40)
I heard some bad thing about him... on other hand 2/4 with not that bad stats on 4/4. Maybe.
    - Reinforcements Stements (30) (Needed for missions with prodigy trait)
Good SCI and SCI/SEC shuttle crew, 2 month away from 4 stars. Keep.
    - Dahar Master Kor (60) ( Again not completely against dismissing him but since he’s already at 60 I thought I should keep him)
    Level is his saving grace...
    - Liaison Torres (40)
On one hand it's Torres so event crew, on other I used her (at 1/4) in the beginning quite frequently - now not so much... on third? Meh.
    - Tuvix (40)
You will get all four stars from just galaxy threshods sooner or later. But you really, REALLY should level component and not him.
    - Grand Proxy Neelix (30)
Do you play gauntlet? If yes or plan to - keep. If no - that is first solid candidate to airlock.
    - Duchamps (30)
On one hand - Worf, on other - your second airlock candidate.
    - Captain Janeway (30)
Janeway. Easy to level. Meh stats. Probably keep.
    - Augment Riker (30)
    - Anbo-jyutsu Riker (20)
Both are meh at 1*. Anbo is two skills, but higher and MUCH easier to level. Augment is, well, Augment. Keep one for Riker events and think if you want to keep or airlock other. There are many Riker events though.
    - Mirror Geordie La Forge (20)
It will be a long, LONG time before you'll get another star. But he is good for Voyages and decent in Gauntlet even at 1*.
    - Rakal Troi (10)
    Next week event.
    - Icheb (10)
He will stay that 10 at least for half an year. Airlock.
    - Ambassador Sarek (10) (Needed for Communicator trait for missions and
    Gauntlet)
He's good if not at 1*... but he drops.
    - Mirror Janeway (10)
Decent CMD/SEC even at 1*. It will be LONG time before you'll get another star. Not as advantageous as Geordi. Airlock probably.
    - Author Doctor (10)
I didn't level him even when I was starved for med. On other hand - Hologram and, well, MED.
    - Mirror Phlox (10) (Needed for Interrogator trait for missions and Gauntlet)
Keep. Do I really need to clarify?
    - Chief O’Brien (10) Needed for Gauntlet
Keep Grand Proxy Neelix for Gauntlet. And airlock Chief O'Brien. Yes, O'Brien is infinitely better character than Neelix... but in pure stats he loses EVERYTHING.
    - Commander Tomalak (10) (Don’t like him but need him for his Command/ Veteran Skill/Trait)
If you got him from drop and not Romulan choice - keep. If not - airlock.
    - Assimilated Tuvok (10)
    Meh.
    - Buster Kincaid Kim (10)
Meh. Unlike above can be used for Eng/Sci for Voyages if there is nothing better.
    - Katra McCoy (10)
MED. And that's all about him.

Got tired here but noticed that you really, REALLY should dismiss 3*/2* crew instead and start gathering new ones only after you send previous ones in cryo. Tuvix and Duras components excluded.
